Polymer Hydration Plants
ClearBakk’s multi-disciplined engineering projects teams have delivered some of the largest Polymer Hydration Plants in the World! There are many uses of Polymer Hydration Plants, such as the treatment of Oil Sands Tailings, Enhanced Oil Recovery, Dewatering, and Water Treatment.
In the treatment of Oil Sands Tailings, flocculating polymers are used to settle thick mud-like slurries called mature fine tailings (MFT’s). This greatly reduces the time for the solids to drop out of the liquid and settle to the bottom of the pond, from over 600 years by natural process down to hours. This is done with flocculant addition, allowing for the majority of the water (up to 85%) to be recycled for mining operations. This significantly reduces tailing ponds sizes and accelerates land reclamation. For these operations this requires large volumes of flocculant to be prepared continuously at a Polymer Hydration Plant, 24 hrs a day!!!
Another use of Polymer Hydration Plants is for Chemically Enhanced Oil Recovery (cEOR). Polymer floods utilize high molecular weight polymers to increase the viscosity of injected water to improve reservoir sweep efficiency when displacing viscous oil. Polymer floods can improve recovery of oil-in-place from 20-30% to as high as 60% in some cases, while accelerating production and significantly reducing water and energy consumption.

Oil Sands Tailings Mitigation
ClearBakk designed a 1,500 m³/hour (8.5 ton/hr dry product) Polymer Hydration and Injection Pump System for an Oil Sands client. The system included dry product handling, pneumatic conveyance, and an air compressor/utility air system. Project scope included design, procurement, fabrication/assembly, commissioning, and start-up.

Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery
ClearBakk was approached by an Oil & Gas client in Alaska to design a polymer hydration package to extract more oil from their reservoir. We designed and built a 4.8 MT/day Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (cEOR) package in 5 months from initial purchase order (PO) to ready-to-ship in order to meet the client’s accelerated delivery schedule.
